Breeze—also known as crusher fines—is one of the most accessible and versatile walking surfaces for DIY landscaping. It packs down into a firm, low maintenance, permeable surface suitable for paths and gathering areas. It is equally at home creating a crisp, geometric path in a modern garden or a hidden, organic nook in a naturalistic setting. Available in a wide spectrum of earth tones, this affordable material allows you to color-match your hardscape to your home’s architecture while enjoying a low-maintenance path or patio that looks good year-round.
As a repurposed byproduct of the stone crushing process, it utilizes material that would otherwise go to waste. It is very simple to install but does have some base prep considerations. Separation fabric is used to keep your breeze from blending with the soil underneath and edging is used to retain its shape and keep it from spilling over.
Notes:
- Compaction equipment is necessary, but easy to rent.
- A drawback of breeze is that because it contains small, angular rock, it can stick between shoe treads and be tracked into your home. Consider a different path material directly outside entrances to your home.
- Excavating 3-6” down is usually needed to prepare the base properly. Plan on using the removed soil in another part of your landscape if possible.
