Flagstone

Flagstone is a premier choice for paths and patios, prized for its exceptional durability and natural character. Because it is a natural material with irregular shapes and varying thicknesses, the installation process is often described as a “giant puzzle” compared to the predictable uniformity of concrete pavers.

This material offers incredible design flexibility; you can embrace a naturalistic aesthetic by leaving the edges irregular or adopt a crisp, contemporary look by cutting or hand-trimming each stone for tight, uniform joints. However, it is important to remember that as you increase the level of manipulation and stone shaping, your overall labor time increases significantly. Whether using it for informal stepping stones or a large geometric patio, flagstone is unmatched in its warm and natural beauty. 

Notes:

• Look for stones that are at least 1.5 to 2 inches thick. Thinner stones (1 inch or less) are prone to cracking or “teeter-tottering” if the base isn’t level. Heavy, thick stones stay in place better under their own weight but can be difficult to move and set in place.
• Because of the irregularities in each stone, you won’t be able to screed a perfectly flat base prep layer for every stone. You will need to fine tune each stone to the stone beside it; adding and removing material underneath the stone as needed to create a level surface.
