Measuring and Layout
It’s time to pull out your trusty design plan! Stick to this plan pretty closely at the start of this measuring and layout stage– you’ve already done a lot of work upfront. If, once you’ve laid things out according to your plan, you need to make adjustments, you can. Taking the time to accurately measure and lay out your design on site will speed up following stages of installation.
Here is a guide to blocking out measurements and layout in your site. Feel free to use as much or as little of this process as is helpful to you.
You will need:
Design plan
Measuring tape (at least 100 feet)
Stakes or landscape flags
String line
Hammer
Level
Spray paint
Tips:
- Use designated flag and spray paint colors for different types of features, such as orange for hardscapes and green for plants
- Measure twice, mark once
- Use a flexible garden hose or thick rope to mock up curves before marking
- Step back periodically to view the entire layout
- Have a second person verify critical measurements
