Permeable Surfaces

Here are good materials for permeable surfaces in your landscape:

Paths and walkways

  • Stepping stones and paver systems – pavers that are widely spaced and set into gravel or groundcover, allowing water to soak into the ground through the joints
  • Crushed or decomposed granite – sustainable materials that are completely permeable and compact enough for stable footing
  • Spaced flagstone – large, flat stones spaced with generous gaps that allow for water infiltration and planting opportunities

Patios and social areas

  • Paver systems – stone, brick, or concrete pavers laid with wide spacing that allow water infiltration while supporting furniture and heavy use
