Sauna and Hot-tubs

Integrating a hot tub or sauna into your landscape provides a private, dedicated wellness retreat, activating your space year-round. These features are often situated to maximize privacy and views, transforming an ordinary backyard into a haven for relaxation.

Consider a sauna or hot tub if you want:

  • The health and wellness benefits such as reduced stress, anxiety, muscle fatigue and soreness.
  • The extended outdoor living space to host friends and family in a relaxed environment.
  • Private and convenient access without having to go to a crowded public spa or gym.

Quick tips for saunas!

  • If your sauna will be electric, consider the fact that you will need to trench high voltage wires from your electrical panel to wherever you decide to place it. This may disturb existing landscaping.
  • Since the contrast between heat and cold is key to the sauna’s health benefits, consider incorporating a dedicated spot for a cold shower, a plunge pool, or an area for snow rolling directly outside the sauna door.

Quick tips for hot tubs!

  • Water is heavy! An average six-person hot tub filled with water and people can weigh 5,000 to 6,000 pounds. You must place it on a solid, load-bearing surface like a reinforced concrete pad (best option), a deck rated to handle the weight, or a level base of compacted gravel. Standard patios or grass are generally not strong enough.
  • Place the tub where it is sheltered from prevailing winds (which cause massive heat loss and high energy bills) and ideally offers a measure of privacy from neighbors. This will save on electricity and improve your experience.
